OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (June 4, 2007) - Wichita State University administration and staff recently celebrated the completion of wide-sweeping energy efficiency improvements on campus that will result in over $1.1 million in annual energy savings. University President Donald L. Beggs was present at the event to receive a plaque on behalf of the university that commemorates the energy saving efforts and financial stewardship of those involved. Representatives from the university enjoyed lunch with staff from Custom Energy, the Overland Park, Kansas firm responsible for designing, installing, and guaranteeing the energy saving upgrades.

The upgrades addressed older inefficient equipment that was in need of replacement, as well as a wide variety of enhancements to the learning environment. Not only will students and staff benefit from the improved facilities, but the impacts on the environment are also significant. According to EPA data, the university will reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitric oxides) by 10,000 tons annually, which is the equivalent of planting over 2,600 acres of trees, or removing nearly 2,000 cars from the road.

Representatives at the event from Wichita State University included Roger D. Lowe, Vice President for Administration and Finance; Woodrow K. DePontier, Director of Gaddis Physical Plant; John D. Gist, Direct of Facilities Planning; Klent Harkness, Director, Computer Services and Environmental Control; Randy Pulec, Director of Facility Maintenance; and members of the Physical Plant staff that played a key role in the project's success.
